Franklin J. Drake


Franklin Jeremiah Drake was a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. He fought in the American Civil War and the United States expedition to Korea.

Drake was born onMarch 1846 at Yates in Orleans County, New York. He served in the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man in the North Atlantic Squadron, participating aboard the sloopofwar USS160Marion in the Union blockade of the Confederate States of America and in hunting Confederate privateers during the American Civil War. Appointed a midshipman onFebruary 1863 by competitive examination from New Yorks 31st congressional district, Drake attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. He performed duty aboard the steamer USS160Gettysburg in 1865 and participated in practice cruises aboard the frigate USS160Macedonian and the sloopofwar USS160Dale in 1867 before graduating onJune 1868. He was promoted to ensign onApril 1869.
